I want a dark version of Pinocchio where the only way for him to become a real boy is to devour the flesh of a living boy. Oh is Sunday. what have I done? WHAT HAVE I DONE. Hnnnnnng. Reminds me of The VVitch. Alice Maud Krige was born on June 28, 1954 in Upington, South Africa where her father, Dr. Louis Krige, worked as a young physician. The Kriges later moved to Port Elizabeth where Alice grew up in what she describes as a "very happy family" a family that also included two brothers (both of whom became physicians) and her mother, Pat, a clinical psychologist. Interestingly, Alice also grew up without television, something which the actress calls a "huge black hole in my education" South Africa did not start getting television until 1976, a year after Alice left the country to pursue an acting career in London. While growing up, she had no dreams or aspirations of pursuing an acting career, in fact as a child she had wanted to become a dancer, but her father disapproved. Instead, she prepared to follow in the footsteps of her mother by attending Rhodes University in Grahamstown where she pursued an undergraduate degree in psychology and literature (graduating in 1975. However, as luck or fate would have it, Alice decided to "take up a bit of timetable" by enrolling in a drama class in order to make use of a free credit. This decision would prove to be a life-altering one, resulting in an honors degree in drama from Rhodes, a move to London and a new career path. As Alice explains, I really got into it and it took over my life. it became my life-calling, all consuming. " After arriving in England, she began three years of study at London's Central School of Speech and Drama. Her first professional acting performance was a tiny television role in a 1979 BBC Play for Today. In 1980, Alice made her feature film debut as Sybil Gordon in the Academy Award winning Best Picture, Chariots of Fire (1981. She then appeared in the television adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities (1980) which was followed by her memorable, dual role as the avenging spirit in Ghost Story (1981. Also in 1981, she debuted in a West End theatre production of Bernard Shaw's Arms and the Man, for which she received the honors of both a Plays and Players Award and a Laurence Olivier Award for Most Promising Newcomer. It was this early success in theatre that she decided to focus her career on next by spending some time working with the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company. During her two seasons with the RSC (1982-83) Alice performed in such productions as "King Lear. The Tempest. The Taming of the Shrew" and "Cyrano de Bergerac. After her stint with the Royal Shakespeare Company, she returned to work in film and television. Her career could best be described as an eclectic mix of both mediums. She appeared in a diverse range of films, such as King David (1985) Barfly (1987) Haunted Summer (1988) Spies Inc. (1992) and See You in the Morning (1989. Her work in television included critically acclaimed miniseries, such as Ellis Island (1984) and Wallenberg: A Hero's Story (1985) as well as a healthy dose of what Alice herself calls, kitchen sink dramas. This eclectic trend continued into the 1990s. In addition to numerous roles in television (including appearances on Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990) and Becker (1998) Alice also appeared in the films Sleepwalkers (1992) Institute Benjamenta, or This Dream That One Calls Human Life (1995) Donor Unknown (1995) Amanda (1996) Twilight of the Ice Nymphs (1997) Habitat (1997) The Commissioner (1998) and Molokai (1999. However, one notable standout was the film Star Trek: First Contact (1996) for which she won a 1997 Saturn Award for her portrayal of the Borg Queen. This is without a doubt the most commercial, mainstream film with which she has been involved. However, due to the amount of make-up and prosthetics that the role required, Alice claims that even today she is still most recognized from her role in Ghost Story (1981. One obvious and lasting impact of her experience with Star Trek: First Contact has been her initiation into the world of Star Trek/sci-fi conventions. These weekend-long conventions take place all over the United States and Europe (primarily in the United Kingdom and Germany. They feature "guests" such as Alice, who give presentations, sign autographs, etc. The new millennium finds her with several new projects to her credit, which include such works as The Little Vampire (2000) the Star Trek: Voyager (1995) series finale "Endgame" Attila (2001) Dinotopia (2002) Reign of Fire (2002) Children of Dune (2003) The Mystery of Natalie Wood (2004) and a recurring guest role in the HBO series Deadwood (2004. Current projects include a film about the life of Julius Caesar, the horror film Silent Hill (2006) Lonely Hearts (2006) and The Contract (2006. In addition, she continues to make sporadic convention appearances and was recently awarded an honorary doctorate in literature from Rhodes University. Alice Krige is married to writer/director Paul Schoolman, and lives what she describes as an "itinerant" lifestyle. Although she and her husband maintain a permanent home in the United States, they spend much of their time living and working abroad. More.

The film is directed by Oz Perkins, produced by Fred Berger, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, and Dan Kagan, and the screenplay is by Rob Hayes. Sophia Lillis and Sam Leakey portray the main characters, alongside Charles Babalola, Jessica De Gouw and Alice Krige. Gretel and Hansel enter a dark wood in order to find work and food to assist their poor parents, where they stumble upon the home of an evil witch. It was announced in October 2018 that Lillis would star in Gretel and Hansel, an adaptation of the German folklore Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm, with Perkins directing the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Hayes. Casting began from November 2018 to April 2019. Filming started in November 2018 in Dublin, Ireland. Gretel & Hansel was released in the United States on January 31, 2020, by Orion Pictures through United Artists Releasing. It received mixed reviews, with particular praise for its cinematography and atmosphere, as well as the performances and horror elements, but criticism of its screenplay and pacing. Premise [ edit] The story is described as being set a long time ago in a distant fairy tale countryside and focuses on a young girl ( Sophia Lillis) who leads her little brother (Sam Leakey) into a dark wood in desperate search of food and work, only to stumble upon a nexus of terrifying evil. Cast [ edit] Sophia Lillis as Gretel, a 16-year old girl and Hansel's older sister. [8] Sam Leakey as Hansel, Gretel's 8-year old little brother. Leakey is making his acting debut. [9] Charles Babalola as The Hunter, a young man who helps Gretel and Hansel to go back home. [10] Alice Krige as Holda / The Witch, a terrifying and powerful evil witch who lives in the shadows of the dark wood and kidnaps Gretel and Hansel. [9] Jessica De Gouw as Young Holda / The Witch Production [ edit] In October 2018, the Hollywood Reporter announced that Orion Pictures had started developing a film adaptation based on the German folklore tale Hansel and Gretel, with Oz Perkins directing a screenplay he co-wrote with Rob Hayes and Sophia Lillis starring as the lead character. [11] Sinister producer Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and The Autopsy of Jane Doe producer Fred Berger, partners at Automatik Entertainment, were announced as producers, with Sandra Yee Ling and Macdara Kelleher as executive producers. [12] In November 2018, Charles Babalola was cast as The Hunter, a new character who helps Gretel and Hansel to go back home. [13] In April 2019, Alice Krige, Jessica De Gouw, and Sam Leakey joined the cast, with Leakey making his acting debut. [12] Perkins explained in an interview that the title was changed because this version focuses on Gretel: It's awfully faithful to the original story. It's got really only three principal characters: Hansel, Gretel, and the Witch. We tried to find a way to make it more of a coming of age story. I wanted Gretel to be somewhat older than Hansel, so it didn't feel like two twelve-year-olds – rather a sixteen-year-old and an eight-year-old. There was more of a feeling like Gretel having to take Hansel around everywhere she goes, and how that can impede one's own evolution, how our attachments and the things that we love can sometimes get in the way of our growth. 14] Principal photography on the film began on November 9, 2018, in Dublin, Ireland, and wrapped in December 2018. [15] Additional filming and reshoots commenced in January 2019 in Langley, British Columbia, Canada. Release [ edit] The film was released on January 31, 2020, by United Artists. [9] Reception [ edit] Box office [ edit] In the United States and Canada, the film was released alongside The Rhythm Section, and is projected to gross 4–7 million from 3, 000 theaters in its opening weekend. [16] 6] The film made 2. 3 million on its first day (including 475, 000 from Thursday night previews. 17] Critical response [ edit] On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 56% based on 50 reviews, with an average rating of 6. 22/10. The site's critical consensus reads. Gretel & Hansel ' s rich visuals satisfy, even if this adaptation of a classic fairytale gets a little lost in the woods on the storytelling front. 18] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 64 out of 100, based on 16 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews. 19] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "C–" on an A+ to F scale. [17] Chandler Levack from The Globe and Mail wrote, Everything about Gretel & Hansel is weirder, smarter and way more cinematic than I'd expected, thanks to some fascinating movie choices made by director Oz Perkins. Kate Rife from The A. V. Club wrote: If one of the boundaries being tested in this film is viewers' patience, the reward for—to use a refrain repeated throughout the film—'trusting the darkness' is well worth the commitment. Frank Sheck of The Hollywood Reporter wrote. Gretel & Hansel may alienate some horror movie fans with its extremely leisurely pacing and emphasis on atmosphere and mood rather than visceral shocks. But while the film certainly demands patience, it provides ample rewards with its lush stylization. " Contrarily, Andrew Barker of Variety wrote that "The problem is that so many of its virtues feel compromised. Mark Kennedy of The Associated Press wrote. Gretel & Hansel is as visually arresting as it is tedious, a 90-minute movie that really should have been a 3-minute music video for Marilyn Manson or Ozzy Osbourne. It's in the horror genre only loosely. It's more eerie, if that's a genre. Actually, it's like dread for 90 minutes. It's dreadful. " References [ edit. Gretel & Hansel Free full review. " Hansel and Gretel. also known as "Hansel and Grettel. Hansel and Grethel" or "Little Brother and Little Sister" German: Hänsel und Gret ( h) el [a] ˈhɛnzl̩ ʔʊnt ˈɡʁeːtl̩] is a well-known German fairy tale recorded by the Brothers Grimm and published in 1812. Hansel and Gretel are a young brother and sister kidnapped by a cannibalistic witch living in a forest in a house constructed of gingerbread, cake, confection, candy, and many other treats. The two children escape with their lives by outwitting her. The tale has been adapted to various media, most notably the opera Hänsel und Gretel (1893) by Engelbert Humperdinck. "Hansel and Gretel" is classified under Class 327 of the Aarne–Thompson classification system. A similar fairytale from Hungary is called Cerceruska. Plot [ edit] The story is set in medieval Germany. Hansel and Gretel are the children of a poor woodcutter. When a famine settles over the land, the woodcutter's wife (stepmother to Hansel and Gretel) decides to take the children into the woods and leave them there to fend for themselves so she and her husband will not starve to death. The woodcutter opposes the plan but finally reluctantly submits to his wife's scheme, unaware that Hansel and Gretel have overheard them. After the parents have gone to bed, Hansel sneaks out of the house and gathers as many white pebbles as he can, then returns to his room, reassuring Gretel that God will not forsake them. The next day, the family walks deep into the woods and Hansel lays a trail of white pebbles. Their father lights a fire for them in the woods, and goes to gather more wood. After a while, the kids realize the father isn't coming back. Gretel cries, but Hansel tells her all will be fine. After nightfall, they follow his shiny pebbles back to the house, arriving by morning. Their father is overjoyed, and takes them back in as he was very upset about leaving them in the first place. After a while, famine strikes again, and the stepmother insists that they take the kids back to the forest to leave them. This time, she locks the door to their room so Hansel is unable to gather pebbles. Clever Hansel crumbles up the small piece of bread he is given by his parents, and sprinkles crumbs along their path. Unfortunately, birds eat the crumbs, and they can't find their way home. After searching for a very long time, they come upon a house in the woods made of breads, cakes, and sugar. They eat from the house, as they're very hungry. While they are eating, a witch comes out and invites them inside, offering them a meal, and pretending to be a kind and friendly old woman. After feeding them, she traps them in her house and makes them do chores each day, feeding them well in order to fatten them up for eating. One day, the witch decides it is time to eat, and has Gretel light the oven and provide water for boiling her brother. After a while, the witch asks Gretel to hop in the oven to make sure it is hot enough to bake bread. Gretel, sensing the witch's intent, pretends she does not understand what the witch means. Infuriated, the witch hops into the oven herself to demonstrate what she wants, and Gretel pushes the door closed behind her, leaving "the ungodly creature to be burned to ashes. Gretel frees Hansel from the cage and the pair discover a vase full of treasure and precious stones. Putting the jewels into their clothing, the children set off for home. They arrive home to hear that their stepmother has since died from unknown causes and their father has not had a happy day since they left their home. They live happily ever after with the witch's wealth. History and analysis [ edit] Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm heard "Hansel and Gretel" from Wilhelm's friend and future wife Dortchen Wild [1] and published it in Kinder- und Hausmärchen in 1812. [2] In the Grimms' version of the tale, the woodcutter's wife is the children's biological mother and the blame for abandoning them is shared between both her and the woodcutter. In later editions, some slight revisions were made: the wife became the children's stepmother, the woodcutter opposes her scheme to abandon the children, and religious references are made. citation needed] The sequence where the swan helps them across the river is also an addition to later editions. Another revision was that some versions claimed the mother died from unknown causes, left the family, or remained with the husband at the end of the story. [3] The fairy tale may have originated in the medieval period of the Great Famine (1315–1317. 4] which caused desperate people to abandon young children to fend for themselves or even resort to cannibalism. Folklorists Iona and Peter Opie indicate in The Classic Fairy Tales (1974) that "Hansel and Gretel" belongs to a group of European tales especially popular in the Baltic regions, about children outwitting ogres into whose hands they have involuntarily fallen. The tale bears resemblances to the first half of Charles Perrault 's " Hop-o' My-Thumb. 1697) and Madame d'Aulnoy 's " Finette Cendron. 1721. In both tales, abandoned children find their way home by following a trail. In "Clever Cinders" the heroine incinerates a giant by shoving him into an oven in a manner similar to Gretel's dispatch of the witch, and a ruse involving a twig in a Swedish tale resembles Hansel's trick of the dry bone. Linguist and folklorist Edward Vajda has proposed that these stories represent the remnant of a coming-of-age rite-of-passage tale extant in Proto-Indo-European society. [5] 6] A house made of confectionery is found in a 14th-century manuscript about the Land of Cockayne. [1] The fact that the mother or stepmother dies after the children kill the witch has suggested to many commentators that the mother or stepmother and the witch are metaphorically the same woman. [7] In the Russian Vasilisa the Beautiful, the stepmother likewise sends her hated stepdaughter into the forest, to borrow a light from her sister, who turns out to be Baba Yaga, who is also a cannibalistic witch. Besides highlighting the endangerment of children (as well as their own cleverness) the tales have in common a preoccupation with food and with hurting children: the mother or stepmother wants to avoid hunger, while the witch lures children to eat her house of candy so that she can then eat them. [8] Another tale of this type is the French fairy tale The Lost Children. [9] The Brothers Grimm also identified the French Finette Cendron and Hop o' My Thumb as parallel stories. [10] Cultural significance [ edit] The fairytale enjoyed a multitude of adaptations for the stage, among them the opera Hänsel und Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck—one of today's most performed operas. [11] A contemporary reimagining of the story, Mátti Kovler 's musical fairytale Ami & Tami, was produced in Israel and the United States and subsequently released as a symphonic album. [12] 13] Elements from the story were used in the 1994 horror film Wes Craven's New Nightmare for its climax. Hansel and Gretel's trail of breadcrumbs has also inspired the name of the navigation element " breadcrumbs " that allows users to keep track of their locations within programs or documents. [14] The most recent adaption of the fairytale is Gretel & Hansel, a 2020 American dark fantasy horror film directed by Oz Perkins.
